RTI reveals ‘zero’ corruption in Chennai Corporation

In line with our mission to bring transparency and accountability in the governance, team OnlineRTI recently filed a Right to Information request with the Chennai Municipal Corporation seeking details on action taken by the authority against corrupt officials.

In response to our questions, most of the departments in the civic body such as buildings, bridges, bus route and others said no action have been taken against its staff since 2007. This revelation was reported by Times of India on October 12, 2015.

The Corporation’s District Family Welfare Bureau responded saying, three employees – one each in 2007 – 08, 2008 – 09 and 2010 – 11, faced departmental inquiries. One among them was reinstated and cases against the other two are still pending. The Corporation’s legal cell registered one case against an employee in 2008 to 2009. Most zonal offices said they have not taken any action against graft.

The solid waste management department said the police arrested one employee in 2009 – 10 and one departmental inquiry is “under process of approval”.
