Mumbai: A Right to Information (RTI) application filed with Mumbai traffic police revealed that not only 7,41,972 bike riders were fined for not wearing helmet, 81 police officials were also found violating the rule in last three years.
The RTI filed in March reveals data for the year 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Mumbai Traffic Police is divided in five different zones namely – South, Central, East, West and North. The zone which has highest number of offender is east while the lowest numbers of offenders are found in south zone.
In the east zone which comprises areas like Chembur, Ghatkopar, Trombay, Vikhroli, Mulund and Kanjurmarg the Mumbai Traffic Police have punished 2, 09, 965 offenders in three years. While in the central zone 1, 17, 077 offenders are punished in Bhoiwada, Byculla, Matunga, Mahim, Wadala and Worli within three years.
In the north zone areas like Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali have 1, 31, 532 number of offenders and in west zone the Mumbai Traffic Police have punished 1, 89, 441 offenders in Kurla, Bandra, Vakola, DN Nagar, Sion, Sakinaka and the Airport region in three years.
The lowest number of offenders is in the south zone. 93, 957 offenders were fined in Colaba, Fort, Nariman Point, Marine Drive, Kalbadevi, Nagpada, Pydhonie, Tardeo.
Overall in 2012, the total number of offenders is 2, 17, 247. In 2013, the total number of offenders is 2, 36, 208 and in 2014, the total number of offenders is 2, 88, 517.
