The Right to Information Act 2005 was passed in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working on the government. Ever since Indian citizens got the Right to Information, it has empowered them in terms of seeking information from the government. One can seek any sort of information from a public authority under the RTI and solve various grievances such as that of delayed passports, delayed changes in the voter ID card and so on.
One can also physically inspect the documents of the government if he/she wishes to do so. With the onset of a digital age, it is now possible to exercise your Right to Information Act Online by using a web portal provided by the government. However the online RTI option is not available for all states and for all departments. So if your state doesn’t allow for online application of RTI you need to apply offline, following the method explained here.
